IMG_1687.JPG I just bought this stove, and it was taken part to move, while putting back together there's odd part that I do not know what to do with. Its cast about 6 in long and has a heart shape on one end. it has on driller hole in it.

That is cover plate B. It goes on the back side of the fireback, and sits just above the rectangular opening in the fireback, in its lower right corner. You should find a 1/4" hole in the fireback above the aforementioned opening wich corresponds to the hole in the cover plate. A 2" 1/4-20 stove bolt with a nut should hold it in place smartly.

Modern stoves achieve their clean-burning characteristics from introducing pre-heated secondary air strategically to smoke after primary combustion. Interestingly, Vermont Castings in 1977 was doing the same thing, just not as well. They really sort of pioneered the concept . This cover plate is part of that system, channeling air (primary air through this particular plate) to the place they thought it would do the most good. Again, their success was limited and the Vigilant could never be considered a particularly clean burner, but they were trying.
