1st Time Post with Jotul 600 Question

That's nice Capt. Ron. Good thing you closed the deal, there would have been a bunch of folks from the north driving to Texas to snag that stove. Don't put away the shorts and flip-flops, your going to have a warm winter in Texas, regardless of the weather.

My new 7 year old Jotul 600...It's sitting outside until I can do the break in burns and build a new hearth pad...sitting in the Texas sun the temp on top got to 160 yesterday! Maybe it will cure just sitting there?...

HOLY MOLY! Now that is a great deal if the photos do any justice to the condition of the stove. Just bought one new myself, but had I seen that deal I would have jumped on it. Congratulations on that stove- it will be a great heater for you!

Thanks Guys, Sometimes you get lucky...it was a rare find down here in Texas...I only had to drive 2 hrs to pick it up...

Remkel, its like brand new...never been used...do you have any pics of your installation?...Did your's come with a bottom heat shield?...Mine does not have one and I was wondering if that would effect how I build my hearth...or maybe just order one...have you done your break-in fires yet?

Think I'm gonna be sick Ron! I bet you can find someone who needs a bigger stove so you could make a swap.. Gather all your info as to size requirements then keep your eyes peeled.. I missed out on a Jotul 600 aka firelight CB deal myself and would have been thrilled with your deal even more! That being said so far I like my new T-5 and think it will work great..

With that big hunk of cast iron I suspect you could feel it's heat from 1400 miles!

Hey Guys, Still trying to make it work...Take a look at this placement of my Jotul 600 and tell me if this might work...The manual clearances with double wall stove pipe and a rear heat shield is 8" from a combustible wall (shown in the picture)...if I place the stove there I have about a 10 or 11 inch offset to reconnect the double wall stove pipe to my existing chimney pipe directly over the stove...is there any problem with it offsetting over the stove?...(I have 10' ceilings in the room)...and would two 45 close clearance elbows get me the 10" offset or would I need a short piece of pipe between them?...the closest furniture to the stove is the end of a leather couch about 48" from the front corner of the stove...the taped off area is where the hearth would extend...any suggestions?...I can't place the stove directly under my existing hole because it places the stove and hearth too far out into the room's traffic pattern and too close to furniture etc...

Ron I love your stove! I can't see why you'd have a problem using it.. That is a lot of heater for any home and easy heat for down south!

Having trouble with the pic, but I will try again. Mine is installed in the basement, so it is not really a comparable situation. Bottom heat shield was included.

Break in burns scheduled for early September. Good luck with the install- I would hate to see you have to give up that stove.

Offsets are common with replacement stoves. We have one too. Show us the big picture with some wider shots. This looks like it could work. Though I would make the hearth a bit wider and not center the stove on the hearth. Allow extra hearth on the side-door side.

San Marcos is only 25 mi away...Here are some more pics of the room...My house floor plan is "upside/down" meaning the master bedroom and bath, living room, dining room, kitchen, entry way, and a big stairwell heading downstairs is located on the 2nd floor...this gives us a great view of the lake we live near...the stove room is all open about 30' x 30' with 3 big ceiling fans to move the warm air around...combine the other rooms upstairs it's about 1500 sq feet that the stove heats...downstairs is guest bedrooms, bath, mechanical room and garage...we usually don't heat the downstairs unless we have guests...use electric heat for that...
If it was left up to me that bad boy would be way out in the room but the "boss" says no...she likes the stove centered on a hearth and does not want the hearth to extend too far on the right side that would impede the walkway to the half bath which is located right behind the stove...I can probably extend the right side of the hearth a couple more inches...
The hearth will be 3/4" plywood with 1" of duorock cement board with slate tile on top...
Well, think this will fly?

Nice looking place you have there. What kind of flooring is that and what's underneath it? Can you cut it out and sink the hearth down so it's level with the floor? That way there won't be any stubbed toes trying to go around the elevated hearth.

Thanks Todd, Great minds think alike...I would have to send my wife away for a few days...it just about killed her when I cut a hole in the ceiling and roof for the chimney pipe...The flooring is red oak...not sure of the thickness or what's underneath it...I guess I could cut a test hole in the middle of the pad to see what's underneath...I think it would look great if doable...attached are a couple of pics of my entryway...I like that look...

I don't see a problem with an offset. For a visual, take a look-see at some of the installations in the perfect picture section of the forum. Offsets are quite common. Also, based on the open room you have the stove setting in - it looks great and ought to get heating done easily.

My second break in burn on my Jotul 600...cruising at 300 F...Burning great even with the air temp outside tonight being 88 F...and only 6 ft of stove pipe used...the neighbors think I've lost it!
