You got that right, bud! There are others that smell good but I think I like White Oak the best. Even better is when it has been sitting around for a while; The aroma is intoxicating! I've got a couple to get that have been down for several years, really looking forward to that. It'll be slow going, though; I'll be spending as much time sniffing as I will splitting.Love the smell of white oak, can't beat it
White oak smells great! Especially when you contrast that to pin oak Yuck!
I split both one day and much more enjoyed the white oak!
My grandpa used to call pin oak, "cat mess oak". It sure burns good though
I think that's probably true and I'm sad to ever lose a White, even though I'm getting some great wood. Fortunately, I have plenty of dead trees to cut so I can let the live ones keep growing.Ive been watching 2 trees compete for sunlight at the edge of my field and the Red Oak is winning out. If I can property ID a white Oak I dont touch it. I try to keep them as seed trees.
Nice tree. Why'd you need to get rid of it?
My yard has quite a few sugar maples and they're crowding each other out too. I want to do the same and thin them out and let the ones I leave to grow better. The thing is I keep thinking if I wait another year the tree will be bigger and I'll get more firewood but I think I'm going to knock down 3-4 this fall.Well it was growing in a wad with a couple more so I decided to take one of them. Im lucky enough that My land is full of white, water and pin oak
Yeah, I need to start managing my woodlot a bit, too. For starters I'll probably get a couple of White Ash that are crooked and taking resources that nearby Hickories and Whites could use. I figure the White Ash are doomed anyway, once the borer gets here.Well it was growing in a wad with a couple more so I decided to take one of them.
