2025 severe weather

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
With the unseasonably warm weather we have also gotten a lot of rain in the region causing record flooding. The rain being supplemented by large scale snowmelt in the mountains. Creeks that are usually tame and 20 ft across have turned into raging torrents and the rivers that they flow into have swollen incredibly. Whole communities have been evacuated due to flooding. The rivers have crested now, but unfortunately, heavy rains will return soon in some areas. We are grateful to be on higher ground that drains very well.

It looks like temperatures will be dropping towards the end of next week and along with that the snow levels. Hope that helps sequester some much needed snowpack.

Is the flooding in your area similar to 2021 floods? Or worse?

We've had a handful of below 0 nights, last night was -3°F and tonight is supposed to be -10°F.

The coldest I have experienced, that I can remember anyway, was a handful of years ago when we had a polar vortex dip down and gave us like a weeks straight worth of below zero temps, with the lowest being -37°F. That's very cold for us, but I know some of you Canadians probably are just starting to put on hats and gloves at that temp. ;lol

In several places the flooding has exceeded the 2021 flood levels. Wildfires in the past few years have exacerbated the situations. Forests help retain a lot of water in the soil. Without those trees, mudslides are a high risk.
