40 pounds of Cottonwood next to 40 pounds of Beech!

I’ve been hauling in Cottonwood this shoulder season and didn’t realize how light that stuff was until it got cold and I needed some “real” wood. The Pictures show My son TJ standing on a scale holding 40 lbs of Beech and then 40 lbs of Cottonwood. The poor kid has to put up with a lot from me.

They were all 16” splits and everything was seasoned 3 full years.

It’s amazing how well that Cottonwood has heated my house with the Progress. One load per day is all I have needed so far, temps averaging mid 30’s. Now get those splits in the house TJ!

Glad it's working out fire_man. This was our first year burning White Pine with some Hemlock, by the middle of this week we'll have burned 1.22 cord, next up is Cherry.

The room with the Progress is 22' X 22' w/ a Cathedral ceiling and that room is completely open with the kitchen and flows well with the rest of the house. We got lucky with the floor plan of this house for burning wood.

Thanks... I'm just trying to ensure I'm not going to roast myself out of my room with a PH! My room is 25 x 40, with cathedral ceilings, a small loft on either side of the cathedral ceiling, and alot of windows.

Depends. Are they bullfeathers? If so, they are definitely heavier.

Dennis: I'm happy when he even bothers to wear shoes, tied shoes are a bonus on that kid! But I think we will keep him anyway.

I found this on Sweep's Library- Firewood BTU. Seems Cottonwood has about 1/2 the BTU's as Beech. Judging from TJ's load, looks like about twice the Cottonwood for the same weight.

Yup, He's a great kid and likes the whole wood burning thing, too.

I'm sadly down to my last 1/2 face cord of Cottonwood, but I'm not sure I'd want to pay for it again in a Grapple load. They delivered a 4' diameter monster that yielded 2+ cord. It strained the splitter more than any other wood and boy was it stringy.

It makes a ton of fluffy ash, and leaves very few coals to start another fire.

One thing that amazes me about Cottonwood, it's got to be the heaviest wood when wet, (you can squeeze the water out). But dry it's almost as light as balsa wood.

Tony Jr. is a good guess. Anything to tell us apart!
