50mph winds.....Flame on!!!!!

Lot of wind tonight in WNY......Have the damper at 2 and the Jotul is running like a blast furnace at the old steel plants...Wow

Holy draft from hell, batman!

Same here in Pittsburgh, PA, unbelievable gusts of wind. Air inlet is as fully closed as closed can be on the 13NC, but the flames are just getting sucked up and out. Burn time, 3-4 hours, tops, on a full load...

Crazy I know. I usually load it back up around 9-9:30pm and call it a night. I guessing around 7:30-8pm tonight. Have my oldest toss some in around midnight.

It is getting windy here too. Gusts are around 30 mph, or maybe a little higher in the last few minutes. My stove is not drafting much differently than normal. I plan to burn hot all weekend becuse it seems like a while since that has been needed.

winds came through here about 1530 this afternoon......started a fire in my little Jotul, no problems with the draft, thats for sure. i use my key/pipe damper to help keep things nice and slow.

I typically run the damper and primary full shut on a non windy day. Today I could have used 2 dampers and that may not have slowed er down.

she's howlin here right now, gusts around 30 to 40mph. will load 'er up with some good white oak a half hour before bedtime and shut the draft off. No damper on this rig....

We had those winds on Wednesday. I think they may have sucked some ash out along with the fire because it seemed like there was more room in the fire box in the morning.

Gusting around 40 mph right now and supposed to continue for the next 12 hours. So far so good. Alittle sqirrely tho, with the trees around the house. Maybe some of the leaners will come down back in the woods.

I just filled for the night and closed the damper, noticed still quite a lively fire with the draft pull, and it is 32'F, so not that cold. But the wind must act like a vacuum and pull a strong draft.

Which direction the wind comes from here determines whether it cranks the stove. From the east, watch out! Tells us which outer wall is the leakiest... Any other direction... no difference.

9 1/2 hrs since my last post, winds sustained at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up at 45 mph, temps got down to mid 20's last night with a wind chill in the upper teens to low 20's. Still had a strong bed of coals this morning, fire went right up, secondaries blazing. Be well

The weather lady said winds here up to 50 miles per hour today, that makes me a lil nervous with the big bad 30.
I do have a pipe damper installed but have not had to use it...maybe today will be the first. :smirk:

I have a manometer mounted to our flue pipe. When I was loading our furnace last night, the draft jumped from .05" to .30" with a heavy gust. I just closed the manual damper slightly and it tamed the draft where needed. I knew the wind could increase draft, but not that bad. Sounded like a jet coming through the basement.

Windy or Calm I never notice any difference in the Draft.

Beyond the the obvious chimney height many things affect draft. Structures near by, trees, hills, out in a field or in a subdivision. I sit on a knoll with a field behind me in the direction the wind comes from and the chimney is 35' tall and well clear of the house peak on the windward side. Days like yesterday 1 damper wasn't enough.

I like to check the Mt. Washington web site on days like today.

I saw 89 mph sustained. Dropping temps. Feels balmy down here.
