Sounds like an ideal starting point! Pun not intended!EW - loading wood side to side (east - west)
NS - loading wood front to back. (north south). Like on a map.

I thought the 118 was long north to south? Most small stoves are wider than deep which is restrictive to E-W loading, but yours seems ideal for N-S.I guess I'm limited to EW with my rig in that case. narrow and long box..

Burger King uses alien technology???BK=alien technology you cannot hope to understand
My fault for being too brief...I can be a bit dyslexic at times. I was trying to comprehend it, but now it's dawning on me that orientation is tip to tip not orientation of face to face.
Got it now!
I have been used E-W loading all my life in that case. I will certainly play around with cuts and splits moving forward. I like being able to grid things to get them up and going. Maybe I have just been so used to it that way, that I am fighting change. lolI thought the 118 was long north to south? Or maybe my explanation was confusing. N-S loading means you can load the wood in lengthwise front to back.

There may be other 118 users here that can help with getting the most out of your particular stove. Most of us like NS loading because most stoves tend to burn front to back, but yours may have different characteristics, I don't know.I have been used E-W loading all my life in that case. I think to the munchy seeking, slow motion stoner going through their drive thrus pretty much anything seems possible.Burger King uses alien technology???
It is a classic front to back (slow cigar burn) burning unit for sure. I was just referring to getting it started and letting the air work itself around as many wood edges as possible. There may be other 118 users here that can help with getting the most out of your particular stove. A copy writer? Maybe you know my step daughter...Thanks! I work with copy and love words, so I'll aspire to learn enough from the many sages in here to perhaps coin a new one.
Loving it in here more and more!
