I'll be curious to see how you cousin does this season with the new combustor. Seasoned wood was not the problem in my situation, in some degree I wish it was so i could correct the issue. Crazy situation about how those bolt snapped off; that should be a fun experience when we have to do it ourselved!
 
I'm not sure the wood moisture is relevant to the refractory failures. This is not like a ceramic catalyst comb. The manual correctly points out that dry wood is key to a good burn, but I didn't find anything saying poorly seasoned wood could damage the refractory.
