I'd agree about the "light" part - hickory is some heavy stuff.its not hickory if its splits easy and is light..... that im sure of.
i say cottonwood.
I believe that's sassafras if it smells strong and fires quickly especially the limb wood
That was my first impression as well however, the bark is not quite right, and unusual for a basswood that small to have that much heartwood.
I can agree with that statement as well.Bark doesn't quite look right for Sass and the inner bark doesn't look orange enough. OP would be able to immediately tell by the smell, though....

Yeah - saw that also. Does look like some hickory except OP said it was a softwood. Just want to hold it and smell it. To bad we can't get smells through our screens/monitors.
There is no smell when cutting or splitting. I am stumped on this one. These came down in our December Ice storm. They were growing in a wet area of the property, if that helps. I'll try and post some other pictures tonight.
