Anybody in Philly?

Hi, first post.

I'm in Philly (East Falls) and had a Heatilator Wins18 insert installed about a month ago. So far, so good, but wood availability in the city is tough. I have to pay $295 per cord for delivery, if I can get anybody to deliver at all, and the last "2 cords" I bought stacked up to less than 200 cubic feet! We're using wood brick fuel to stretch out the supply through (hopefully) the beginning of February, at which point we'll have to buy another ton of bricks. I just bought about a cord's worth of oak rounds from a guy in Roxborough, but they probably won't be ready to burn this year.

I really enjoy splitting wood by hand. People look at me like I'm crazy and I get a kick out of that!

There is a recycling center across the river where the parks department dumps logs from felled trees. They're only open during work hours until April, when they open on Saturday mornings. I'm looking for pallets too - they're great for starting fires.

Is there anybody else here from Philly who can give me a few pointers on where to go for pallets and wood rounds?

Have you checked Craigslist? Do you have a chainsaw & are you looking to cut up wood? Are you looking only for free wood? Here is one link that you could check out.

Here is another link to a log load for $800. I'm not sure if it's a good price or not or how many cords it equals. I have no experience with either ad, just sharing what I've found.

Just bought a Husqvarna 435. I don't have the space to store a log load but I would go 1/2's with somebody if they were local and had the land to store it.

I just got about 3/4 - 7/8 cord from Craigslist for $125 but I had to pick it up myself and split it myself. Getting wood is a lot tougher in the city!

Check craigslist. There is always a ad up for pallet scraps. This will help extend the wood supply.

There's a place in the northeast that advertises cut offs from pallet repairs on CL, free just have to pick up. I've seen several free wood ads on the outskirts of the city, too far for me to be bothered with. Welcome to the best forum on the net!

Cant say that I do. I work in Reading and don't get out much......LMAO. I do spend, obviously, a lot of time on CL tho. How I see that ad all the time.

I'm outside of Philly by some 50ish miles, but grew up down there. All I can say is keep your eyes open on CL. Stuff does pop all around on the mainline and whatnot. If you have a big trailer and want to drive up 309 to quakertown, let me know. $50 1/4 cords, generous, well-seasoned, and high grade. Hickory, ash, oaks, beech.... and you will get a lil silver maple, but he's a straight shooter. Seasons on his property. in stacked bins. Basically runs a firewood factory.

You need to watch what you get from that guy. Have got full bins with high moisture content. Also if you catch him on a day when he is in a mood he acts like a real jerk.

Being in the city is an advantage. Just call some tree companies and see if you can pick up free wood. Where I live it's nearly impossible to find free wood. People in the city don't usually burn wood, so tree companies should have a ton of wood.

I work in south philly occasionally, and down by the boeing plant and harrahs ive seen a company that sells firewood. I burn both wood and coal in my furnace,im not certain what type of stove you heat with, but i would give some serious thought into switching fuels and going with anthracite coal as it would be easier for you to buy in that area. I buy the antracite i burn in philly as its mined in northeast pa and much cheaper than what they charge here at home. I buy from a guy who sells it off Lehigh Ave , runs $210 a ton bagged. Something to consider, i burn wood until it gets bitter cold then switch to anthracite, much more heat and more effiecent than wood !
