Hello, here in Canada, I'm putting a wood stove in my workshop which is considered a hazardous location and as such is required to be 18" off the ground. The inspector told me the ash catch is part of the firebox if there is a manufactured hole to access the ash catch. Even if it is temporarily plugged it is considered part of the firebox. Can anyone confirm this interpretation?

Therefore, in the pictures below, I would still need to raise the stove off the ground to account for the ash catch.

Thank you.

So the firebox needs to be 18” off the ground, measured from the bottom of the ash pan or 18” from the bottom of the pedestal?

If you haven’t already purchased the stove look for a stove with no ash pan and/or a stove with a shorter pedestal.

Having a higher loading door sure makes it easier to load the stove.

If the inspector wants 18” give him the 18” he wants.

Here is a screenshot of my WETT Inspection, #18 is I’m guessing the portion of the code that he is referring to. I didn’t look it up but it will give you some reading material.

Thank you, he is saying 18" from the bottom of the ash pan. Therefore I will need to raise the entire thing 6" higher off the ground to account for the ash pan. No problem, just wanted to confirm the industry standard considers the ash pan as part of the firebox.

Correction, since the ash pan housing is not enclosed he is saying technically the entire pedestal is part of the firebox. Therefore the entire thing needs to be 18" off the ground. Just an FYI for anyone thinking of buying a stove with an ashpan or pedestal. Probably not the right stove type for a hazardous location (garage)
