I have a McCulloch mac 3200 with a bad bar oil tank. I'm not sure where the best place to by parts is. I have looked on ebay for the part but can't seem to find an oil tank. Does anyone know where I could get one?

Thanks.

I just checked a bunch of typical sources and it looks like you're in a tough spot. The new original part is no longer available. It was succeeded by another part number which is also NLA. Oil tank failures were very common on this model, so chances of finding a decent used one are relatively slim. At a used parts site that apparently sometimes has them but is currently out of stock, the price they list is about as much as the whole running saw would be worth.

I saw one forum thread suggesting that the tank is made of high-density polyethylene and can be welded with a soldering iron, potentially adding in pieces cut from other HDPE containers. I think I'd be getting crafty, or looking for another saw.

The tank itself is ok. The previous owner of the saw over tightened the fill cap and crush down the threads, so now it leaks out of the threads when the cap is on. Which I can handle while using the saw, but once I put it in the cabinet it leaks any remaining oil out. The fact is discontinued explains alot. The saw itself runs great I'd hate to get rid of it. I guess I'll see what kind of room I have to work with. I might just build a new tank from aluminum.

Yeah, hate to lose a good runner. You've tried multiple layers of teflon tape around threads? Or dump oil when done and put on a cookie sheet.

I have tried the tape on the threads. No luck with that. Right now I have it sitting on a big piece of card board. Cheapo cookie sheet might work better.

Thanks for the help guys.

Looking at the IPL for a McCullough 3200 chainsaw ( http://www.mcculloch.com/ddoc/MCCI/MCCI1987_AAaa/MCCI1987_AAaa_MAC3200_.pdf ) says the part number for the fuel/oil tank is 217761. Looking on eBay for "217761 tank" shows a hit:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-McCULLO...820741?hash=item280cb416c5:g:2zUAAOSwBLlVAOvr

Not sure if this is the part you need, but good luck! If it's not the part you need, you might put some saved searches on eBay for that oil tank part number. That way, if/when one pops up, you'll get an email from eBay.

Yeah, I saw that IPL but I dismissed it because the text "Pro Mac 3200" was just hand-written onto the IPL, while the original printed text only refers to some older models. Maybe they're similar enough that there's some parts interchangeability?

Try this guy. He's a good man. Drop him an email if you don't see it on his site - he might have it anyway, and if he doesn't, he might know where to point you. He's the kind of guy who will do that to help you out.
