Yes, it's OK. Anything sufficiently rigid and non-combustible. Once it's in there, properly fitted and secured and insulated, the gauge of the sheet metal isn't going to matter. Rick
 
I use the eight buck piece of galvie from the duct work section of Lowe's. Works a treat.
 
i used 2 pieces of fireproof board and attached to damper frame with home made toggle bolt plus some fire insulation to seal around liner.
This is 8 inch liner and i cut out damper frame and some brick as needed to make liner fit straight down

Thanks so much guys. I have had this insert for 6 years now and I am hoping this block off plate makes a big difference. I'm not sure being its an interior chimney but I want to get it off my mind
