I have had Douglas fir delivered, and have always burned it in my woodstove along with hard woods. I now have a HearthStone and buckets of bark, and I suppose that it would be fine to burn in my HearthStone stove, but I am wondering if it will affect the cat combustor?

If it's clean (all natural) bark, I think it should be fine.
However, bark can create more fly ash, which can clog up the cat, especially if you have high draft, which may well happen when you burn a load of (sappy, airy) bark
So I would mix it in with normal splits

I've found the bark burns ok with a hot fire, but it makes lots of clinkers, probably due to high silica content.

If the bark is in large slabs, they can make a dandy tiled roof for the wood stacks. I did this for a few years when we had big trees taken down on the property .

I am wondering if I should use it before I close the cat bypass?
I would not.
Just burn normally and mix it in, especially if it's sappy.
