This warm spell gave me a chance to get the stove in, and I needed to get the leaves picked up before they killed the lawn. I was going to drop the liner in from the roof, but after going up on that steep roof three times to build up the courage to do it, I decided that the boom lift was a bargain. We really had to wrestle with the liner to get it down the old masonry chimney, but it finally made it in one piece. All the leaves go into the garden- about thirty loads. Now we are really enjoying the wood heat!

I knew I forgot something! You are right, Heftiger, should have included a picture of the stove. My excuse? My lady takes all the pictures and e-mails them to me (I don't have a smartphone, she does), and while she is real happy with the nice warm house, and enjoys the nice fires, she hasn't sent me any pictures of the stove yet. I'll get on that!

More than I wanted to pay with delivery, but MUCH less than my health insurance deductible.

I bought a used JLG 40H when I built my log home . It has saved an unbelievable amount of time and added a huge amount of safety . I never could have built it with out it .

Right on, Mark. I joked with my neighbor that I had bought the boom lift, but I really would like one. Even if it is just for the view from the top! It's super impressive that you built your own cabin, my small projects take up every bit of bandwidth that I possess. What do you do with the crane now that the cabin is finished?

The boom lift has made my life so easy from trimming trees to putting in the chimney , hanging christmas lights, staining and chinking the logs. The list is endless. From the ground to the peak in front , its 36 ft. The log walls will have windows this spring , french doors and a wrap around deck. Stone chimney and a log trussed porch with stone pillars. Stone veneer on the basement walls and hopefully move in in less than 2 years.The crane came from a salvage yard real cheap. After some rehab , it built the log home with my wife at the controls. 12 yrs in construction so far, the end is near along with my retirement. I have 4 people who want the crane , so if they can move it, they can have it. It weighs about 18 tons , so scrap value is what I paid initially.

Very cool. When the rental shop came to pick the boom lift up, they had a really tough time getting it started. I thought, what if that had happened on the day before (Sunday) when I was at the full height of its lift! Did you ever have that happen?

Yes it did happen to stall when my wife and I were in the basket together. We had just got the lift and we wanted to take pictures of the log home from above , when the motor dies. I didn't think much about it, I'll just push the start button to start it back up and we can get down. Well it cranks and cranks , now my wife starts to panic. I come up with the stupid line " put out or get out", she did not see the humor there. Well the motor still won' t start , I notice a switch labeled AUX. I push it and hear an electric motor, its the electric hydraulic pump which will run all functions until the battery dies. problem solved.
Another time , I'm up in the basket and it dies , Won't start, cranks real slow, Aux doesn't work. Thank god my wife was down at the cabin with me, I had my cell phone so she comes over . Now it's her time to make me beg to get down . I had to promise to do all kinds of chores before she would open a relief valve to slowly lower the boom to the ground. Lessons learned always check fuel and keep battery terminals clean. LOL

even without power most booms and lifts will at least be able to lower back down under the magical forces of gravity. Dont ask how I know lets just say borrowed neighbours rough terrain scissor life and it stalled out when up in the air.

Most Lift trucks have hose burst valves. These keep oil in the cylinder incase a hose blows out. Everytime you lower the boom hydraulic pressure has to open the burst valve for the boom to come down . The electric motor would have to run a pump to pressurize the burst valve and open it.

not exactly sure im not a hoist mechanic all i know is if theres no power most will lower just by using the hydraulic contol valve.
Ive done it on a few different manlifts/scissor lifts, otherwise you would be stuck if you shut the motor off and it wouldnt restart.
Sometimes theres an emergency lowering valve as well.

What holds you up in the air when a hose blows?

As said before the cylinder, needs pressure to open the load holding valve . So if a hose breaks the valve closes , holding the cylinder from retracting or extending .When you go by a rental yard , you'll always see the boom up in the air , makes for more compact storage and he boom will stay up indefinitly.

Emergency lowering valves and the aux. pump will get you down . But from the basket , you only have the aux pump , if the motor doesn't start you need somebody on the ground to restart the motor or to open the lowering valves.

Many homeowner, owned lifts etc.are usually altered to bypass the safety features /lock outs etc. Rental and business used machine are required to have yearly OSHA inspections that keep them from being a safety hazard. My JLG can be altered to still work if I bypass certain safety features. I don't bypass , I fix what needs to be fixed asap.
