Can hearth extension sit on carpeted floor (pic)

I didn't realize i would need an extension for my hearth.
After reading the specs, i do need one.
Can the extension sit on a carpeted surface?
Does it need to be the same height as the existing hearth?
I am installing an insert and need about 12" extension.

Yes it can as long as it provides the mfg's requirements for hearth protection. The air space created by that drop in height is a good benefit. I think you'll only need ember protection with that amount of drop.
