Can I leave out the surround alltogether and just brick that area out?

Building a hearth/mantle around an insert. I'd prefer to not have the big black surround around the insert if possible. Can I just build my enclosure right up to the side of the unit where the surround would have been? I'll be using brick/manufactured stone so it would no be combustible.

Sounds like that would be a pita when you need to pull the insert for maintenance.

Thought about that. I can hinge the sides so they'll open up. I'm just wondering if it will hinder the unit at all or cause any safety issues.
