Can you tell ... by the smell?

I know I could tell if it was a Cummins, Detroit or a Cat by the smell of the exhaust, all burning the same fuel.
Yup, pretty easy to tell apart from the sound too. Also 7.3 Powerstroke too, very distinct sound/smell

I can tell from a whiff when out in the back yard if the furnace is burning hot/clean...or not. Hot/clean is a nice light roasted wood smell, cool/dirty has that pungent, strong creosote smell. To me the smell is more accurate than the presence of (or not) smoke
