Can't see the wood burning

Those firebricks better not crack from heat. Unless they were wet. Blunt force trauma is a more likely cause.

I could see how the upper brick could have cracked from wood hitting it but the shoe brick is protected and can't be hit and that was in four pieces when I lifted it.

I believe it is possible, though difficult, to hit the shoe brick on occasion. It's recessed but not fully protected.

You would think the composite material these pieces are made from might be sturdier than, or as sturdy as, normal firebrick. I don't think so. I guess mine broke by some combination of heat and trauma, but not excessive - two years is a bit short on lifespan.
