CB1200 Combustion blower suddenly very noise

i cleaned my stove today, didn't remove anything, just a vacuum and blow out some areas. I turn it gave in a now the combustion blower is very noisy. Am I looking at a replacement? Any other ideas? Do I just need to remove and clean it? I don't see why it would suddenly be so noisy just from cleaning it, I'm sure I didn't damage the fins or anything.

Did you take the side plate off and clean area in front of fins? Could there be something in there hitting them you missed? How old is stove? kap

This is my third year with the stove, it's not real old. I did take that plate off, the one held on with 4 screws? I will open that up and take a look. Thanks

This is the one making noise. It seems like if I spin it with my finger it even makes a noise. It doesn't appear to be hitting anything or to be out of balance or wobble or anything.

You can also try to put a little 3in1 oil on bearingshafts, even tho they are sealed bearings. There is a squirrel cage on both sides of it. Could just be barely loose and causing issues too. Page 31 of your owners manual should have instructions on how to do it. kap

Thanks. I watched a video on YouTube on how to take it out and clean it. I wasn't very smart installing the stove, it's in a corner and all the pipes are caulked together with high temp silicone out through the wall, it will be a pain to get it out to clean. I didn't want to tackle it tonight, maybe tomorrow night or Thursday. Thanks for the help.

Even with what you did, it still shouldn't be that bad to get at. You shouldn't have to take the exhaust apart.(unless you really got it jammed into the corner.lol) Let us know how it goes. kap

Your right, I got it out pretty easily.

Do I oil where I'm pointing the red straw? How else do you recommend cleaning it now that it out?

Yes. Where the shafts go thru. Best way to clean is with an air compressor and a stiff bristled brush or tooth brush. You need to clean all the blades on the squirrel cage and all around the motor. From the way you described things, I'm surprised you didn't find something in there making the noise. kap

Hi jjk,

My Quad convection blower had one of the squirrel cage impeller fins crack on the outside rim circle that holds the blades together, and it was rubbing on the metal housing that surrounds it. I removed the clip that holds the fan on the impeller shaft with a needle nose pliers and gently pulled the impeller fan off the shaft, then 'splinted' the two fan blades together at the broken section with a bread bag twist tie, and so far it has held on its 3rd burn season since the repair.

Considering Quad doesn't sell just the replacement squirrel cage, that was a cheap fix compared to buying a whole new convection blower assembly. You can remove both impeller fans with the above method, as you can't get at the inboard sections to clean them without taking them off the blower shafts. I soaked mine for a bit in hot soapy water then brushed them clean with a toothbrush. After letting them thoroughly dry I sprayed a thin coat of teflon spray on the fin blades to keep the dirt and cat hair from building up as much, which has seemed to help.

I also found that the rubber composite washers that go between the motor and the sheet metal housing had deteriorated, and the motor mount nuts had loosened from the heat and vibration, so I replaced the washers and snugged up the motor mount nuts, and that cut down allot on the vibration noise.

I had the same problem. Both blowers got very noisy after only 4 years. You can clean it all you like, but the noise will return. Only way to solve the problem is replace the cheap China-made bearings with good ones. I did and it's amazing how quiet it is. Not hard to do

Thanks for all the help. I was gone all day so I'm just getting time to look at it again.

I saw a video that showed the 2 spring clips to remove the birdcages. But mine appears to be different. Possibly held on with the round clips that go around the shaft. I can't remember what they are called, I know there's a special pliers for opening them up to get them off.

I'm thinking of maybe bringing it somewhere to redo the bearing, what type of place would do this? Anyone deal with Quadratec for repairs? It looks like the warranty on this part in 2 years, I'm only over that by 2 or 3 months, any chance they'd replace it?

No clips on yours. Just pressed on shaft. Replacement depends on how good of dealer you got. Don't hurt to ask as he can only say no. Meantime, you can try cleaning it and see how it does. If you have some type of electrical motor repair shop to see if they would do it, but have never heard of being able to replace the bearings on these. kap

I had my convection blower motor rebuilt at an auto electric shop( starter and alternator shop)last year..brushes, bushings and a good cleaning..looked like new and
runs like new...$20 with 90 day warranty. The Tech was done in 2 hours.

Well I like the auto repair shop idea, especially if they use better parts or something. But, I called the dealer and without even asking they said I'm do close the the 2 years I could just come down and get a new one.

Couple more questions. One, I can't get both screws in, only one or the other. Any have a trick to getting that motor screwed back on? Main question though. I may have pulled some more wires loose:



There's a green ground in the bottom of the stove not hooked up. Then I've got extra white, yellow, and brown wires not hooked to anything. What are these for and how do I hook them up? Or dont I need to?

Those should go to your power outlet and thermostat block that are in the lower right side in your above pic - on the lower part of the sheet metal shroud. On page 38 or 39, depending on whether your CB is an insert or free-standing, of your stove manual is the wiring diagram that shows which color wire goes to which terminal post.

You can also look at your first pic you posted of the convection blower, when the wires were still connected, and it should show where they go (before - hand pics are always a good thing to do) !

Talk about a brain fart. I saw extra wires and freaked out I guess.

But, I hooked them back up, plugged in the stove, turned the thermostat on, and nothing happens. No red light calling for heat or anything. There is power at the outlet. I'm hoping its me being dumb again.

I unplugged the stove before doing anything to it. I checked the fuse and it's ok. The red light by the fuse is not on either.

Actually I have no light right by the fuse, mine a little different.

Did the thermostat wire electrical connections on the back side of the T-stat block come loose or disconnect when you took the sheet metal shrouding off ? Also, make sure the power plug-in is completely seated into the power block. Either of those could have come loose with moving around the sheet metal shrouding.

Nothing appears to be loose. I've unplugged and replugged everything back in. Should I unhook the thermostat and jumper those 2 wires together?
