I've been cutting the last year and a half with my Dolmar 510 and either semi or full chisel, and as a general use saw we get along fine...but it boggs down a bit when I bury the 18" bar in tough dead oak, which we cut a fair amount of...so...enter a new 7900 with a 20" bar. I figure I can always run and get a bigger bar and have plenty of saw to pull it around when the need arises, but as a firewood saw, 20" should be adequate 99% of the time. A few pics:

5100s in 16"d. section of ash that was standing dead.
18" Dolmar bar (16" usable), 3/8 sq. chisel chain.
I can't imagine what a 7900 will do. Some day I'll have one. Not sure I can justify getting one, but I want one. LOL.

Hi Brian VT, you may remember that you gave me the recommendation on the Dolmar P5100S - it was a good choice for me. You look about the same size as me, and a lighter saw is better for us "not big" guys.

I've been slamming my Dolmar through old hickory all summer - doesn't go quite as fast through that as the Ash you cut through in your video. I'm looking forward to cutting something less tough one of these days.

Hi Brian VT, you may remember that you gave me the recommendation on the Dolmar P5100S - it was a good choice for me.

Glad you're happy with it.
I haven't cut any hickory, but I cut some big downed sugar maple. Too big, really.
I had to leave the bottom 10' of trunk because it was 32"d.+, so I couldn't get through it with my bar.
I thought the saw still did pretty well, for what it is. I had to really dawg it to bog it down. A 70cc/24" saw would have been nice, though.
Don't be shy with the HS screw. Mine seems to like a bit rich. Keep a sharp chain and let 'er rip !

I'll ask the dumb question. Do you put a smaller bar on the 510 then, since you have another saw for the big stuff?

Good choice in saws, I have the 5100 with an 18in bar and the 7900 with 24 and now 20 inch bar and I like the 20 much better. Best saws I have ever owned.

Did you guys have to adjust your carbs at all from the factory settings? I've heard of some of the Dolmar saws leaving the store running a bit lean thanks to the EPA.

My dealer adjusted it before I left and he asked me to bring it back after break in (10 tanks) for a check up.
The HS did need to come out a bit after break in. I adjusted it myself but better to go to the dealer if you're not confident in case there's ever a warranty issue. I think most all combustion engines come lean from the factory due to the crap the EPA mandates.

I agree. Seems most small engines do these days...mowers, ATVs, you name it... The 4 strokes are a bit less sensative to it though. It'll really make a mess of a 2 stroke.
