Chimney Cap and BlockOff Plate Question

You shouldn't need to use any stove cement if you do it correctly, which I recommend since you don't want to keep pulling this thing out.

I cement all the joints on an insert install you usually dont have to but i like the added insurance

I'm wondering if I cab find a really really flexible one since the liner itself is very very rigid.. It would make things much easier when installing the insert back in place. There is not much room in there to get the prices to all line up

what we usually do for a situation like yours is attach the adapter to the liner and slide the stove under it and bolt it fast

Ya its a pain in the ass. I almost regret this entire project. I should have just closed this fireplace up , and removed it all when we remodeled this room. Then I could have shoved a freestanding stove in the corner . I'm still somewhat confused but with all the responses, I should be able to work through it. Hopefully some more people can chime in

It is a pain because of the tight quarters but not complicated. Either get the adapter or crimp it so you have the appliance adapter attached to the liner lift the whole thing up and slide the stove under it then attach the appliance adapter to the top of the insert with bolts that you predrilled and tapped. Its a pain but not that hard

Ya, I hear ya. Hopefully I can get this done over next weekend. Kind of pressed for time with work during the week. The Wife and I have a new addition to the family, a 3 week old baby girl. Now we have one of each.

No.. Are you saying once the stove is slid in you can't get to the pipe?

So after Tom Brady threw that interception, I fired up the laptop and did some more digging around. I stumbled upon this thread regarding crimping stovepipe.

I think I am just going to buy the tool, crimp the liner and then insert it inside of my appliance adapter, i will then use some stainless steel self tapping sheet metal screws to secure the liner to the appliance adapter.

Is it worth using flue tape for the seam?

You need more than screws that liner is so thin those screws wont hold you need rivits with backing washers. And no the tape will do no good dont bother

me from getting a second adapter...

Thanks bholler. i appreciate all your help in this thread. Im going to go ahead and buy that 5 bladed crimp tool, crimp the liner, insert it into the boot and then use those rivets with backing washers. Now the original point of this thread was the blockoff plate. Its kind of a bust due to the tiny area in there. Im just going to load it with Roxul and call it a day.

That should work fine on tight installs like that sometimes that is really all you can do

Sorry, I'm of no help, but am looking at this insert on CL. How is it going? Did you get it installed and running? How old is the insert you have?

It actually looks like the insert on CL is missing the surround. I wonder if that was an optional accessory at the time of purchase??? I am going to try to include a picture.

I did get it reinstalled and it has been in use since Thanksgiving. That picture is not the same as the stove I had. My stove is approx 10 years old.
