My chimney produces an odor when it gets too hot. My stove is a heritage 1 8021. My chimney goes straight up.

By chimney, do you mean the stovepipe? Is this single-wall black metal or a double-wall stove pipe? What is too hot?
Sounds like painted stove pipe. Depends on the pipe, the paint and how hot it's getting. Most do smell when too hot.
