Chopper Axe

I've got more axes than fingers and never bought a one of them cause they were all given to me over the years.

Yeah they're handy...my favorite one is a 12" axe I use when splitting, if a split piece is hung up with stringers I just one hand 'em with that. It stays right on the hydralic reservoir of the splitter. My next favorite is the lightest full size single bladed one...I use that when I'm harvesting elm trees...they have many many small limbs that can ply hell with my chain...so it's easier to axe them. So easy I consider it taking a break.

Also I have a few double bladed axes...but have never used them...I guess they're for actually cutting down trees.

If your going to use an axe just make sure to keep it sharp sharp. A dull axe will bounce instead of bitting and bite you in the leg.

I've never felt my fingers and thumb were at risk from an axe I'm using, can't same the same for my legs and toes.....I try to never use an axe, a maul is bad enough.

Agreed, Jerry...it's the hatchets I've injured fingers with...splitting kindling. Axes I use a lot, and yes, it's the lower legs and feet you gotta be real careful of. I was just giving savage a hard time, that's all. I'm a softwood burner, as that's about all we have available. Most of it splits fairly easily by hand. I have some Fiskars tools (both axes & hatchets) that I just love. Nicely made from fine steel, virtually unbreakable handles, and very sharp edges. Some of the nicest tools I've owned. All my old axes and hatchets are collecting dust in the tool storage rack in the back garage. The Fiskars tools have their own "rack of honor" by the door out to the "splitting fields". Rick

Lots of gimmicks out there. Maybe it does work well... anything to make splitting easier I guess, but I can't see the moving parts holding up.

Yes, I have it and love it. Highly recommended. I've also used the monster maul, but prefer the chopper.

Oh, that chopper axe! btw thanks for the link fossil...they've been around for a long time but I don't know of anyone that uses one, sorry.

Just say'en...I'm inclined to think what AP says about those moving parts not holding up over time. Although WarmGuy has provided a positive recommendation.

I remember my mother bought one for us to use to split with in the early 80's. Didn't work very well. You can get a top notch splitting axe and maul for less than they want for the chopper axe.

My neighbor lent me his CHOPPERAXE last year to try on some gnarly maple I'd drug home......I gave it back to him within 1 an hour.....my MonsterMaul and SuperSplitter work much,much better;in my hands at least.

I've used 'em - nothing special unless maybe you have perfect wood which responds to that sideways force.
