Is it possible and/or safe to put a coal burning stove into an existing fireplace. We have removed customers wood burning insert and are going to frame it out, add 2 sheets of durock and firebrick panels. Is this ok to do?

As long as you are sure the existing masonry fireplace is within code (8" solid masonry) and you run a 316 stainless steel liner (insulted if the chimney is not within current code)
The issue will be clearances to combustibles. In this case it will probably be the framing if wood, but also will include the mantel if there is one. Is the stove UL tested and approved? If so the clearance requirements should be in the documentation for the stove and on the UL label on the stove.

Wait, is this a real masonry fireplace or a zero clearance fireplace that your taking out then planning on installing a coal stove? Pics would help greatly.
