Should the combustion motor not have a seal? There is a gasket for the housing and a gasket for the plate that the motor is bolted to the housing. But where the shift goes through that no seal?

No seal is needed there. Due to it's location it's on the suction portion of the impeller, air can only go in that opening and not out.
