Hi friends,

I've uncovered this fireplace (will be a feature, not a working fireplace) and am looking to understand what I'm seeing.

Perhaps you can help?

The red arrow is pointing to a slot inside the righthand wall of the fireplace. It's quite deep and appears to have a big, abandoned birds nest inside of it.

I'd like to have it opened out but nervous about the structural integrity of the rest of the fireplace.

The green circle appears to be the remenants of a lintel. But i can't see it was very well set into the wall on the otherside, and it's very close to this strange slot.

Many thanks
