Dead Standing/Elm ?

These are what some think are Elm, both drops went well with the tops hanging tough until it hit the ground, I did take the maul so I could split some, some split like Elm others split with one drop of the maul.

I'm thinking these will go in the shoulder season wood for 2014-15. Pic 7115 & 16 are some markings on the second Elm?

That first one, the end grain almost looks like Red Elm...split pic might help. I know that some Red I recently split, if it was slightly punky it would pop right apart. Some of the solid ones, not even very big, didn't yield so I tossed 'em aside for the power splitter.

Either tomorrow or Sunday I'll be splitting, I think tomorrow is the day I'll take care of the pine mother nature put down that just missed the splitter.

That bug damage looks like bark beetles/Dutch elm disease to me.

Yeah Zap, I just dropped and bucked a dead elm today myself. It sure doesn't take long for it to start to go punky, even when standing. The one I dropped today was about 14 inches at the base, and solid about 8 feet up, then started to get an inch or so of punk on the one side, bark falling right off all the way up. Wet and heavy

I sure do like seeing your woodscapades.

I split some elm today that we cut last winter. It was frozen when we cut it and quite solid but I was amazed today to see how far it had deteriorated. No doubt I'll separate that and burn it next fall because it won't last too long in the state it is in.

It sounds like Red Elm is better in that respect. It can be dead, no bark, and lying on the ground for a while and still be pretty solid. On the other hand, a bigger one that I got recently was pretty spotty until I got about 12' up the trunk. Maybe the smaller ones are drier by the time they fall...

By the looks of some of that Zap you better rethink the shoulder season of 14-15 and move to the summer of 13.

You're getting quit a collection of shoulder season wood.
It can always become fire pit wood in short order

I've been ignoring some of the dead standing to long, once the burn ban is off (May 15) I'll use your idea, some for the fireplace.
