We are in the middle of a large remodel and the walls on each side of the fireplace are disappearing and the wall directly behind the interior fireplace will be replaced to carry the load of concealed LBLs. Once the Sheetrock came off I found studs in contact with the masonry and what appears to be smoke stains in a couple of mortar joints.
The chimney (the house was built in 1966) has two 12x12 flues that services two masonry fireplaces one in the basement and one upstairs directly above it. We only burned the upstairs one a handful of times and never the downstairs one, Which at some point was lined.
It wasn’t unexpected to see combustibles touching then brick but smoke stains are unsettling but I they were very small but I have have no history of how much they were used.
Anyway one flue has an insulated liner installed and the other one will too before anything get burned it. Just thought I’d share this with everyone.
