When my wife met me I was obsessed with building scale truck models. Then I became obsessed with the brand new pickup truck that I bought in '96. Then I became obsessed with the boat we bought in '00. Then it was the old truck that I bought in '06. Around '09 I became obsessed with the whole wood heat thing. This is the first obsession that actually provides for the family, gives me exercise, actually saves money, and keeps me at or close to home. What's so crazy? I work with guys who talk non stop about watching sports, or playing golf! At least my obsession is productive.
My wife sees wood for sale in people's yards and is amazed that it is still green. Same thing when she sees someone covering the entire wood pile so it can't breath. Maybe it is because both she and I grew up when wood burning was the natural thing to do.
GR, you are not alone. You just tell us about it. My wife professed to not particularly like the whole wood burning thing for years. Then this last winter, after we remodeled the kitchen that summer, I ask her why we couldn't put the table back in the corner of the kitchen (since the remodel we had been eating at the dinning room table which openly adjoins the kitchen.....no big deal, I just wondered what the empty corner was for) Well, she proclaims she wants her own little wood stove in that corner of the kitchen. And of course I got busy and put one in. She just doesn't get on here and talk about it. I try not to get caught and switch tabs when looking at others woodpiles on here... Guess I got it worse than I realized. :lol:
I wouldn't bother buying anymore 'seasoned' wood because the stuff you've had stacked x amount of months is probably drier than what they'll give you. Very few sell the real deal (I don't know anybody around here that does)

I'm all set with wood for year #2 running the Oslo, ...and I absolutely LOVE the wood burning.
Aside from some time and effort (and yup, I'm crazy too, ...since I kind of enjoy cutting it ), ..but it's FREE and plentiful (especially this year with a bit of help from Irene and Lee).
On top of that, ...my heating expenses for fuel oil went from about $2500-$3000 a year,............to $600!

Thanks tbuff, I see you have the Hearthstone Craftsbury. Funny, I considered it for our kitchen. Can't really remember why I didn't go with it. It looks a lot like my Hampton.tbuff said:

I just showed my wife the brickwork and trim you did on your hearth and she is in love with it... I actually am in the process of re-doing our hearth, so I may be kinda copying ;-)
We love our Craftsbury, does the job perfectly. It is a small stove, but because of the way our house is layed out, it really heats everything almost perfectly even, +/- 2-3'f...
