Feeling the Heat
This question has been asked a few times, so I think I will go with my favorite answer.........DRY! 
My favorite out of my personal stacks are Osage Orange (?), Mulberry, Ash, and Oak.

While I love the dry species, I think I have to go with the free variety.

Aw Geez, did I forget that one? Your absolutely right, that one is a very good one too!
Depends on what I am looking to do . . .
Pine is nice if I'm looking for a quick, hot fire to take the chill out of the air in the Spring or Fall and don't want to use up my good wood . . . also it often provides a bit of visual appeal with the snapping, popping and crackling.
White ash is nice for my all-around good wood . . . plus it is very easy to process.
White birch is nice for reloading on small coals with its bark being its very own tinder . . . plus it just looks pretty.
Beech, black locust, oak and sugar maple are nice for those long, hot burns in the middle of winter.
Black cherry and apple are great when processing for the delicious smell . . . and they're always great for setting aside for my friend to smoke some meat.
I could keep going on . . . I guess I really don't have a favorite wood . . . unless pressed . . . and then it would probably be white ash. Happily I get to burn many types of wood.

For what flooring or furniture? Just kidding. Locust with a touch of mulberry. By itself, well seasoned Ash or Red oak

Black locust is my favorite. Probably because I've never had osage orange; as that is pretty rare where I am.
And yeah, ya gotta love oak (and I have white oak and pin ok seasoning now), but the dry times takes it down a notch for me since I don't have room for 3 years of wood on my property.

Fresh, split, southern red oak that is stacked and exudes that wonderful smell of memories gone past.

Pine/spruce. Drys quick, burns good and low ash. Also, light to carry once dry. And usually people are happy to get rid of it.

yellow box or red gum. Apart from being brilliant wood to burn, the smell takes me to a happy place haha

Whole logs of trimmed osage freshly cut by a road crew to 66" lengths, that they happily load into my truck to avoid bucking them.

Hard to say - I'd be pretty happy with a mix of red oak/white ash for cold weather and red maple/birch/cherry for the warmer weather. Cheers!
