Interesting looking at the degree days for cities in upstate NY. February was 37% colder than normal.

Albany, NY normal heating degree days for February is 1070 and this year it was 1470.

January normal is 1257 and this year 1403, which is 12% colder.

I know that put a dent in my pellet stash.

Average temperature up here was 6 degrees, a new record low.

I think all the talk of 2013-2014's "polar vortex" needs to be put on hold, this year was the coldest in my 25 years in this house. Good test of the new pellet stove's ability to get the job done.

ahh, funny I thought that is exactly what the polar vortex affects, as in colder winters in the northeast?

Man, the weather has just been so cold! I'm happy with pellet heat this winter, I went beginning of November through the end of this week on 4 tons and a little propane on the side.

Just did a little research and it seems the term is a bit more specific and that this years cold in the Eastern half of the US may not have been properly described as the "polar vortex?" Oh, you can find media outlets using the term like drunken sailors (specifically WaPo and Guardian), but others have ceased using the term as they were told they were misusing it.

Here's a couple of articles to take a gander at:
Arctic blast across U.S. will make the 'polar vortex' winter look tame

My brother, who lives in so. Ca. tells me this is the warmest winter he has ever experienced. Was this a Northeast thing with the rest of the country unusually warm? I remember seeing somewhere that ski areas in the western Canada closed because of lack of snow.

Hmm, and I thought I only pointed out that it affected the local weather, and not caused it? I won't get into the real cause, as it might cause a melt down. Then we would have the first ever known cause to climate change by mankind.::P

" What the polar vortex affects "

I do know it was seriously cold, each and every day. The winds added to the painful experience. I've had colder times here over the years, but not as sustained day to day as this last month.

Our county was 1756 this year and last year was 1395_g
