To better control the air on the Progress Hybrid, I closed the air control completely, took a magic marker and put a line on the casting next to the air control lever. This is now the closed position. Then I put additional lines in 1/4" increments to show various degrees of opening. I now have a scale for setting air control relative to the type of burn that I am looking for. The heat of the stove has no impact on the marking-they do not burn off and I now have repeatable references. Simple- I don't know why it took me 2 1/2 seasons of burning to think of it.

When I first got the stove, I put 4 marks on the stove by the lever: top, bottom, 1/2, 1/4. It helps, but your idea has got me thinking. The adjustments are really between 0 and 1/4, so subdividing that further would be more helpful. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd be curious as to where you normally set it. I keep mine either at closed or maybe around 1/2 inch from closed normally. The only time I open it up is when I'm loading wood or getting the stove going when it is cold.
Sounds like a great suggestion for the maker - to eventually cast marks in there or even apply a label if that area allows it (heat).....
Most stoves don't have such markings, but I can see how they would be useful....although different in each installation depending on the chimney, wood, etc, they would still give you an idea of where you were relative to your own use.

I'm with Toddnic. My stove only runs more than a crack open when I am burning down coals or reloading. And maybe when it is -20 to -30 F out... I find it really easy to adjust the level to where I want it. Markings would be meaningless for me...I'd never look at them.

I agree Todd but am wondering why you did not show the picture of how you marked your Fireview. This would help some folks methinks.
I normally run between 1/4" to a max of 3/4" open during normal operations. I do not run fully closed since that occasionally creates back-puffing.
The only time that I run significantly higher is when starting a fresh fire or to re-establish after a reload.
I suspect that the reason that the factory did not put marks into the casting is because the of the variations during assembly in where the closed position is from stove to stove.
Having said that, there is no reason why they would not place markings similar to what I did after the stoves are assembled and the closed position is established.
