My old Whit has been good to me for another heating season! So good, I have treated the stove with new firebrick. Ahhhh, looks brand new, but I notice that there is a gap, and the flame is going in. Is this a problem, or have I not took notice to this before. My old brick had a gap, from use, but I can't say if flame went in.
BTW, I was still offered by one of the pellet stove employees, if I ever replace my stove, he would like to buy it.

And what old Whit do you have? Update your signature:)I got a couple Whits. The Quest I think has good looks with its heavy cast door, cheap and easy to replace Fasco oilable fan motors and simple controls. Who needs auto ignition here in MN.

Who needs auto ignition anywhere? Just another component to break. Hand sanitizer is cheap and plentiful.

Still use half page of newspaper with handful of pellets to light a Countryside.

Never did that with my Countryside clone but I could, I guess. I find resstance cartridge igniters to be well.....too modern. I'm old school.

The old Whitfield Advantage II. A fine stove. So.... is the gap a problem? and what is "update my signature" ? Good for you on the Whits!!! Bought mine in 93. Had very few problems, but the fine people here straighten that out. Oh... and a match does work wonderful.

I can't say if the flame hiking around your board is an issue or not as I do not have that model. Most of the time fire going around a firebrick is an issue.
Your signature is all the info you see under a posting. Mine has listing of stoves and pellets used and other BS so others can figure out what stove or fuels I might be crowing about :)

I have heard of people having this problem. Where exactly is the gap, around the shoot?

I think either the new board Isn't made correct to spec or they say the firebox warps and it wont fit right, remove your brick and move it around gently and see if you can close the gaps, mine I have to add stove cement around the hole to seal it, have had leaks on bottom of center brick is the problem, you can see ash getting sucked in and that defeat's the traps, pipe will fill up faster and your losing some heat.

Just removed new brick and put back the old. Solved! Called the store, and they will "work" with me on this. The suggested a service call to see if it is the brick or my stove. HA! Talked to another person and he said just return new brick. We'll see. Heading there tomorrow. I will figure out the signature thing out. Thank you!

I have the original brick set in my stove, which is a little warn out from age. There is a gap around the shoot, however since the back wall is flat, it's not a problem on mine. nothing gets back there.

If the original fits and the new one doesn't, it's a problem with the new one, period.

I admit to not enjoying having to start the Quest in the morning, but I do love that old stove. Simple and great design.

It beats the chore of getting a wood stove going, and if you have a bag of pellets it's going to go all day:)

I only turn my whit off when I want to empty the ash. Besides that, 24/7

Mine is in a downstairs office. I generally turn it off at night simply because I'm not down there, except when it's very cold (mid teens or below) at night. I also turn it off when I'm away at a client all day, also unless it's below freezing during the day or if I'm going to return within the day. If I had an ignitor and tstat I could add much convenience, and that will at some point likely have me replacing the old Quest and moving it to another location, replaced by a newer Harman or Quad or something similar. But it is a wonderful work horse, and has kept me very warm through many an hour of work. Just fantastic stoves. Classics.

I have a profile and wonder if the Quest could accept the profile parts to upgrade it to auto ignition etc.? Quest has the igniter port in the pot already. The profile was a real cheap stove in comparison to the Quest.

I was able to return my firebrick. The clerk open several boxes, and the brick was all the same. Wrong size. The owner came to talk with me because I wanted a refund. He didn't really understand and said he he has never heard of this being a problem and the flame shouldn't be to much of a problem. I showed him a video I took, and he said he could either file the brick to fit. I told him the problem is, the hole is too big all ready. BTW about a quarter inch, each side. The measurement of the brick itself was off as well. When installed it hit the sides of the left and right baffles, and really didn't fit the back like it should. He advised, that I really should have a service call to find out way my stove is pulling air in like that. I said with old brick in problem solved.
He said he would find me brick, it just might take some time. I said not a problem, but wanted a refund til that time came. He was amazed that the Whit is still running and assured me parts are going to be my big problem soon.
Bioburner... I will work on that signature. Heat was more important right now!

Thanks agian!

The boards are simple and repairable and the fans and auger motor assembly are off the shelf. If the stove parts were going to be an issue that would have been the case ten years ago IMO:) If you watch CL one probably will be able to get a whole stove just for parts for under $300. I got a Whit Profile for a camp stove last summer off Ebay for around $80. Ugly but works fine

Nice camp stove for $80! What is used to repair firebrick? I have been looking around for awhile for another older Whitfield for parts. The glass especially. The control board I replaced a few years ago is hanging in there. New blowers last fall, my auger replaced last month. The new brick was just cosmetic, thought My steaming, hot Whitfield deserved a dental!

I am going to cast a new one for the Quest from castable refractory. Big bucket of the stuff was $28.
Really playing with the idea of upgrading the Quest to auto ignition using the board and igniter etc from the ugly profile

Actually Whitfield made an igniter upgrade kit for the Advantage and Quest pellet stoves. Some weeks ago there was one for sale on eBay.
The add is removed now, so it must have been sold, but luckily I took some screen shots, so you can study the details... from the instructions we can see that both the Advantage and Quest stoves should be prepared for installation of the igniter tube:

I know the fire pot had the igniter hole in the stove(Quest) But being a used stove did not know if the pot was original. Thanks for the info.

I just replaced the igniter in my Quest. Previous one lasted about 4 years. 3-5000 starts is how they are rated. The kit(above) was factory installed before delivery.
Do I have to turn in my hand sanitizer? I used it while waiting for the part. Works great!
