i was wondering if this wood help in anyway. If you put a cast iron grate in the insert for possibly hotter temperatures or may it benefit in other areas.
I no it’s taking up room in the box

Only use the stove as manual indicates. So, that means no grate.
 
You'll get an inferno if you do that. I wouldn't do it.
