Fireplace opening

I recently removed my rock fireplace. Installing a new mantel and wall. Previously it had a heavy iron bracket supporting a chain mail curtain. Now the opening is too high and smoke escapes into the living room instead of escaping thru the flue/chimney. I am going to use hardibacker to make the opening smaller. What is the standard dimensions for a fireplace with gas?

The opening height depends on a lot of things (flue size and height, etc.) but most are 30" or under. Very typical fireplace sizes are 30-36" wide and 26-30" high.
