Spent the day in the woods and found lots of standing dead wood. There's so much good firewood, I was drooling :) We're probably up to 2.5 cords against a target of 6.

Cut down 3 black locusts that were very dry. Sounded like a wood block - we were making music! We've stacked this wood in the garage to keep it dry and get us started for the winter.

Cut down a cherry tree that was about a cord. Our new chainsaw (Husqvarna 562xp) went through it like butter! That's what's stacked off to the right in the picture.

Took home 3 truckloads worth thanks to help from the in-laws. Some maple in there, but mostly locust and ash.
Anyone else spend their day cutting? Thoughts on how cherry burns? There's a ton dead due to a major windstorm. The area where we are focusing on has mostly locust, maple, and cherry. [Hearth.com] First Wood Haul

I like burning cherry but I like to smoke with it better. I like to BBQ chicken and steaks on a cherry wood fire and shut off the air to smoke the meat for the last 5 mins or so. You got a nice mix of hardwood there. GL with your new saw!

All great burning woods species. Love burning cherry kinda like maple , but has a great smell when burned. How do you like the new 562xp.

We have a lot of cherry around here, I like burning it. Good heat from it and dries fairly quick.
 
Looks great!! My buddy and I went and loaded a stack that was CSS last fall, a mix of cherry, oak and maple. It seems seasoned well as we just had an exceptionally dry and hot summer.
 
Ahhhhh ! Locust, my weakness, Cherry burns good usually nice to split too. That new saw should eat up the wood, been looking at that model myself. If you can get ahead a year or two with that locust stash (really let it season out) you'll think your burning coal, all wood is like that though, gets better & better with time.Nice pic the woods are awesome this time of year.

Today was our first day using it. Seems great so far - starts easily and can handle a more aggressive chain on it than the other saw we had today. FIL was using his Stihl 034AV (1980s era) and traded for ours when husband started splitting some of the big stuff. The 562 cut significantly faster than the 60cc Stihl - granted it's ~25 years old(!).
 
Sounds like we need to get better at identifying locust! Right now, we identify them when my FIL points at them and tells us what they are - especially when they don't have leaves.

The locust trees we cut today had been dead for awhile - the bark was mostly gone. And, most of it was small enough around that it won't need split, which is an extra bonus :).
 
Oh...and we did manage to get 2 chainsaws stuck in the same tree! Thank goodness for the hand saw.[Hearth.com] First Wood Haul

ETA: Husband blames FIL for this one...after getting the first saw stuck, he started from the top with the second saw :P

A day in the woods is always a good day.
Good learning experience on how to cut a leaner too, by the picture ::P
Nice saws, & some great BTU fire wood.

Keep it coming.
Having next years wood split & stacked will make it well seasoned dry wood for next year.
Even dead standing wood need some seasoning time to burn well. Seasoning starts after it split & stacked.

Locust , ash & cherry good fire wood ,
Soft maple is good shoulder season wood & if sugar maple almost as good as locust.

He blamed your Dad, the nerve. LOL :)
 
I love the way cherry smells and it seems to burn nicely, the little bit I've had. I do have to fight the dogs for it...

Love the puppy picture!

There's a cherry tree with 2 large trunks down and 3 more trunks still standing that's dead...just need to get a plan together to harvest it safely.

love to spend the day cutting...once the winter season hits we will spend even more time out in the bush....there is even talk this winter of setting up a shack at our cut site, somewhere to cook lunches etc, our goal this winter between my friend and myself is to cut and process 25-30 cords

That's a lot of wood! What's the temp outside while doing the cutting?
Seems like it'd be too chilly for me, but after living in Louisiana for 4 years, I still wear a sweatshirt when the temp falls below 70...

temps forecast for this weekend are about -5 c overnight but once the sun come out during the day it should get above freezing, maybe even t shirt weather...during the cold of winter we usually don't cut if it get below -25

Leslie, there are many of us who do all the cutting in winter. We start around December 1 and end around March 1.

Love that cherry! It makes great coal beds, smells fantastic when burning too. I like to be out in the snow and catch a hint of cherry and white oak burning in the air......you can almost feel yourself getting warmer from that smell!

I love the wood burning smell in general. I'll be impressed with myself when I can ID dif wood types by smell!
