First wood ID thread

Friend had the condo association take a tree down that was threatening her deck, and had the presence of mind to have them buck it and leave it!

Unfortunately, there is no foliage at all, from this tree or any other nearby. Any thoughts on an ID, folks?

Not certain but could be norway maple.

Maple would be nice to put away.
I was concerned that it MIGHT be red oak..

Bark looks like Norway maple....rings look awfully wide though.

I have Norway maple and never seen any reddish color in it, just saying...

Possibly some sort of ornamental. Dogwood. crabapple?? Could you ask her if she saw flowers on it?

Doesn't look like Norway to me. I would assume ornamental also. Potentially being a hybrid or non-native tree can make it rather hard to identify.

Unfortunately, friend doesn't know sheet. She knows it's a tree, and that's where it stopped.
Awfully tall and straight for a crabapple or dogwood, IMHO... I have those on the property and they seem to spread without gaining much height, while the pictured trunk is a good 30' straight up.
All that said, what would help to ID this wood better? Leaves?

Im thinking Maryland has some kind of temperate climate that could pull some southerly species into the possibilties.
Yes, pick up leaves under the tree. I saw alot. And a clear end pick showing bark, inner bark, sapwood. Maybe a split.
My phone is picking up a red color in the heartwood, is that correct? or just .jpeg?
There is scarlet oak leaves and pin oak leaves there.
Those are 2 oaks Ive never cut.

It's definitely not pin oak; I just sit a bunch of that. Doesn't look like Norway Maple I've split either. That said; I can't actually tell you what it is!

Last pic looks like red oak to me. Tough to tell.
How does it smell? Is it that pungent stinky sock oak smell?

Did it have a umbrella type canopy? Or did it grow straight up? Umbrella canopy indicates it could be a Redbud. Leaves look like a spade shape(Playing cards). Only thing I can think of. They usually don't last to get 30' though. Very small purple flower in clusters and sometimes hard to see from far away as the leaves are large and cover them.

There is a red in the heartwood. I'll be over there again this afternoon for better pics and maybe some leaves.

Maybe I missed something, but the rounds are sitting on oak leaves. My gut says oak, as I've personally never seen a redbud that large in diameter, but that doesn't mean much.

Yes Fechmup, I saw the leaves under/around the wood too. I don't know if the picture was taken at the site or at his house after he picked them up. Don't see saw dust? Yes, usually Redbuds don't get that large in diameter but if left unattended who knows? As I said before they seldom get 30 ft either.

Photos taken on site- I was invited to "see if I wanted the tree" without being told it was already down. There are some chips on the ground but the pouring rain washed away the most obvious sawdust.

First thing I did before posting was look for leaves on similar trees nearby. The forest is bare! I'll get some ground photos shortly.

I'm thinking more of a Pear or Ornamental fruitwood like Pauly said; I don't ever recall seeing a cutside piece that looked like that with that rainbow of colors in it, yellow, green, reddish-orange. Really cool looking-whatever it is it looks like it'll make good fuelwood.

Well, here's what I got...

I picked one of each kind of leaf that I could find. Also got as close as I could with photo of bark and heartwood.

Also got down and sniffed- didn't get that oaky smell... just smells like wet lumber, TBH.

You'll have to crack one of those rounds open and show us what the grain looks like to get a better idea please....

Leaves look like Oak, Beech, Maple and ????? on #4 top left. My guess is oak of some sort.
