Free firewood

What is the best method for gathering free firewood?

Also I've seen some round or logs that have been cut down and left at the side of the road or at the driveway of some houses around here. Are they giving it away for free ? I have a trailer and saws so can easily grab them just not sure if it ok.

Just ask. At those places. And at tree companies. Tell them you'll take any wood, green, and tell them how much per year (i.e. tell them it's more than 3 wheelbarrows...). They like to dump whole loads rather than smaller quantities. And tip those who deliver.

And look at craigslist.
