What is the purpose of the pad that goes under the firebrick in a garn?
 
Nate - I believe it is two-fold: It helps insulate the lower fire box to increase the efficiency of the primary burn, and it protects the floor of the firebox from abrasion/corrosion. I have my manuals at home, and will try and remember to check them. I think it describes it that way.

All the above plus it provides a little cushion for the bricks.
