We have an 1,100 sf mid-century modern house in the Northeast that is only partially heated (with propane). We've never gone to it in the winter but would like to improve the insulation and maybe install solar panels. There is a big gaping brick fireplace that is in bad shape (see the photos). We love wood stoves and have used one for years but may go for a gas insert because we will have renters at times and worry about them burning the house down, and also because we are told propane is the better environmental choice even with a very efficient wood stove as an option. We'd love suggestions for a big, simple and sort of modern looking gas insert and log system that mimics a wood fire without looking corny, can heat as a secondary source, is reliable, and not noisy. I'm going to try to attach pictures and dimensions. Thank you in advance for your help and expertise!
