We've had our Lopi Revere insert for four years now, but before installing it the last time I'd burned wood regularly was in the late 70s/early 80s. The brand of stove I had back in those old days was "Pioneer," manufactured here in Oregon. With that stove, I had a couple of windows blow out, completely shatter, esp. after a coal had come into direct contact with the glass. The first one to go was tempered glass, and then they supposedly upgraded the material for a later replacement... however, they soon issued a fine steel screen to their stove owners that slid in to back-up the glass in case of failure! Obviously I wasn't the only one with this problem.

So, that experience is always in the back of my mind when I fire up our current model and then leave it unattended. The dude who installed our insert said that the "glass" was actually a high-tech ceramic, a big improvement over older materials... my question is, is this stuff essentially bulletproof in normal usage? Do the windows pretty much never fail in any scenario during normal operation?

It'd be good to hear that this doesn't happen, so that my slight apprehension based on a 30-year-old experience could be laid to rest!

The window is made of pyroceram or neoceram...both names of ceramic glass that was developed in concert with NASA to fill their very special needs. So, that window is an off-shoot of the space program that now benefits lots of us in lots of ways. It is very strong, very tough, and very heat resistant. Rick

Bulletproof? No. Safe with normal, sane use? Yes.

The ceramic windows used in modern stoves are safe in normal use. No sledge hammers, please.;)

The only thing that will break that glass is you hitting it with something or trying to use it to jam that one last piece of wood in with the door.

OK, what I've heard from you guys so far is pretty much what I wanted to hear... thanks!

When it first came out, the standard sales pitch was to stick a snow ball to a hot glass! Just to show that it wasn't vulnerable to thermal shock like the old stuff.
