I found a Stihl 036 Pro for $300 that is in great condition (supposedly). I have not seen it yet. Do you think this is a good deal?

What about this compared to a new 290 for 359?

If it runs good in the cut yes not a bad deal at all! the o36 is alot better saw than the 290(you can compare the 036 to the new 361)

Ditto, I'll take my 034 over a 290. As a matter of fact, my bro in law has! (he owns a 290, I, a 034...he borrows my saw all the time)
$300 is a good deal if it runs/cuts well & has good compression

This is what the guy told me about the saw:

Hi, I can't take pictures right now. My camera is not working now. The saw was had a new cylinder and piston installed and seals and crank checked. It has a new bar and chain. I just finished the saw Saturday evening and tested it. It looks and runs great. The only thing I noticed was the chain creeps a little so I ordered new clutch springs for it which I'll install Friday when they come in. I don't know the true age but it's in nice condition. It was run on straight gas and had low compression. I want $300 for the saw.

Low compression.

Had low compression,Just make 4 or 5 cuts if it runs good through out the cuts its good to go!(new rebuild!) Yea

I gave $130 for an 036 at an aution this past summer...new bar/chains....really rocks!

I think that price is a bit salty.
That saw new 589.00

Exactly my point...$300 for a saw w/low compression

What's a new piston/cylinder....whatever else may ail it...let's say $200. Then, you have $500 in a used saw.
My 036 was a good find, altho bar/2 chains/air filter was as much as I paid for the saw.

might read that again the new piston is in "was low compression"

EXPLAIN. was it " the new piston was put in and after a compression check was done to reveal still having low compression" or "a new purposfully built low compression piston was put in to run on lower grade fuel. big difference.

Nobody I know has ever heard of a "low compression" piston for any Stihl. Factory recommends 93 octane...end of story.

I'll second that...

A rebuilt 036 is a much better saw than the 290. If it looks presentable and runs good grab it up.

I'll third that.

I was confused as to the description, sorry to all for that. if it has new bottom end/cyl./piston, then $300 is good. I don't use my 290 anymore after scoring the 036!
