Got the new Progress fired up

Did the breakin fires, Now I got it up to 580 stone top to cure the paint. Quite the fire storm going on in there.

I put the brakes on , I put a damper in the OAK . shes calmed down a lot. holding 690 stone top. Medium intensity secondary's temps down from 690 to 680. Im going to let it cycle down like this from here

That's hot! I'm not worried about you hurting the stove at those temps, but I have to ask; is it 100 degrees in your house right now? I've had the PH over 600 maybe twice and it is a freakish amount of heat.

During that process I had the windows open to vent the fumes. The directions for curing the paint that came with the stove said take it to 600 for 45 minutes to cure the paint. As per the manual high output range is between 600 /700 stove top. It also states not to operate over 700.
I had a thermometer stove top / cast iron near top exit flue / and on the rear exit pipe about 1 foot away from stove. The stone top reached 690 because the cat is the hottest spot. the cast iron near the flue exit was at 550 . Im not sure on the flue temps . the hole time during the high temp burn the air control was only cracked open. The temps outside were between 45 /48 degrees.I fully closing the air control at 650.
Like I said I put the brakes on at 690. . The secondaries were very aggressive so I closed the air supply with a dampener installed in the OAK. The secondaries were less aggressive & the temp stopped rising & them began to fall.
Thats with the warm outside temps , What do you think would happen if it was 5 degrees out without the dampener in the OAK???

i bet that was putting out huge heat. ive never taken mine over 550. usually its in the 300-450 range and keeps my house toasty with long burns. I loaded it once prematurely on a very deep bed of logs and coals and the thing took off like a rocket. It was roaring, literally. I had to shut it down quickly and cut off the air. It roared for maybe a minute or two with incredible secondaries and heat coming off the glass. luckily the stove is very controllable and responds well to air adjustments. You would really have to push this thing, or completely ignore it with air open, to overfire it.

Wow! That must have been something to see. I'm not planning to take mine up to that temp until it gets very cold outside although I did hit close to 500 on the stone today by accident. It seems that once you get things going good and hot the stove likes to cruise at that higher temperature even once you turn the air all the way down - even if flames go out.

I'm trying to master the art of the lower long term burn but it seems the stove really prefers to burn hotter. I won't mind a bit once it gets colder for sure as I will need every bit of the heat.

So I'm curious - how much wood you fed into it to get that burn and how fast did it eat it up? i.e. was that a 4 hour burn to blast that heat out?

Slow1 the PH has the best fire show of any stove I have ever seen! Thing is the BTU's are really cranking too especially for this weather. I am looking forward to Woodstock's newest stove!

I have to agree although to be honest I haven't seen all that many different stoves burned. Even when in 'mostly cat' mode so far it seems my PH has a nice flame show most of the time. When cranking out at a high burn I have a hard time walking away from it.

I don't know about this new stove... My 10yo asked me if we are going to keep upgrading our stove this morning... I said I hope not. Then again, the basement doesn't have good heat now does it... hmmm... Seriously, I really do wonder what WS has cooked up as it is bound to be interesting.

Sounds like you should have more control than that. If the air was just cracked open I would hope the stove would settle down to a lower output. How tall is your chimney, maybe you need a pipe damper to slow things down but you should prolly play around with it a few more times just to see if this is a consistant thing.

Todd , Thats what I was thinking. The chimney is outside masonry 12x12 flue 22 feet. About 20 years ago I lined it with 8 inch stainless & insulated with rock wool. This year I put a 6 inch liner inside the 8 & insulated with Perlite.
I agree this stove needs more intake air control. Even with my OAK damper closed it maintained good secondary's , 14 hours later 200 stove top & clean glass. I may look into doing more for air control. I have a 6 inch damper if I need it but haven't installed yet.

Doug, am I reading this right that you are not using the air control on the stove; just the damper you put in the OAK?
