Hampton hi300 and Rutland guage

Hey guys. I have had this stove for a good number of years now and am just wondering at what temp do you burn hot. I tried to resurrect and old thread but wasn't permitted. I usually burn to around 350 on the Rutland but accidentally had her up to over 420. That was pretty scary. Weird noises and smells. Really have never found a good place to measure temp on this stove so just stuck with the Rutland on top shelf/middle. Thanks in advance.

On that insert there is an air gap between the top shelf and stove body. Your reading of 420 may of been as high of 620. I run this unit in my showroom and have found a 200 degree deffence from shelf to the body. I have taken a cat temperature probe and laid it on top of the stove with a remote monitor. I would say your reading of 350 is probably a pretty good temperature given the differential correction between body and shelf.

Thanks for the reply. I'd say based on my experience over the last 7 years with stove you are correct. 350-375 is throwing out some serious heat.

Are there any remote style therms that allow you to put the sensor on the top inside that air gap area instead of adding 200 or so?

http://www.condar.com/Catalytic_Thermometers.html. this is one option if you willing to drill a hole through the top shelf also there is a digital version. It a 1/4 probe.

Good to know I have the hampton hi300 insert, house is warm but I have the inferno gage, it tops out at 400 and then cruises at 300-350. House is at 70-75 on the first floor so it is working fine, I just was expecting higher readings

Like mine other with Regency inserts I have a thermometer on the top-right just above the door. That measures the actual stove temperature. Not sure if this would work on the cast-iron surround as I've never owned one.

On the Regency 2400, I aim for readings for 400 to 500-550 at the highest end. That gives me great secondaries, and I've never seen anything that would concern me with this temp.
