"The Surprising Reason Firewood Prices Are Going Up" (broken link removed)

This is the first I have heard of this practice, and may explain why all forms of firewood have gotten more scarce and expensive lately.

I did see someone on Craigslist selling spent "mats" for firewood, but they looked like they had been lying in the mud for awhile. Not sure if they were fit to burn at that point

Here in NEPA, firewood has stayed pretty consistent in price, as the wood that has come down for many pipelines and pads has gone to the mill and/or gone to firewood.

At the mills, log prices haven't been that great, and demands were being met by construction from the gas industry, so I haven't been seeing as many landowners doing selective cuttings / maintenance. That said, as the construction of well sites and infrastructure slows, if prices in lumber don't go up, our prices in firewood might start to go up if there is a shortage without people getting the loggers back in for land maintenance.

In all, I am skeptical about blaming prices solely on "mats." The ones that I see being used around here, get recycled over and over. They very well could play a part in the price, but around here, I'm just not seeing it.

I'm going to move this thread over to the wood shed where the discussion is a better fit.
