I have a 30 year old Harman P61 manual light and I've heard conflicting reports as to wether it will shut down or go out to "idle" when its too warm to run.

According to the P61-2 manual, which does not have auto light

[Hearth.com] Harman P61 manual turn off in room mode.

What happens when it goes above that temperature, does it shut off or idle until it needs more heat. That's the question. I just don't need it shutting off in the middle of the night when the the temp goes up above the set point and can't restart.

Interesting post about non-ignitor P61.. I have P61A with ignitor and temperature probe connected.
with that setup [ROOM AUTO]yes the stove can and will shut down if the room get's above temp it was set for Depending on how long it keeps that temperature.
sometimes for 5 or ten minutes, sometimes much longer depending on how tight or insulated your house is and " holds" the heat.
same stove in room/manual will just back off and just dribble few pellets at a time just to keep the flame alive but will Not shut down.

Your P stove without ignitor would prob react same as mine does in room manual since ignitor is not being used ...
I assume it will just simmer with few pellets dropping in to keep flame alive or else u would have to manually re-light your stove everytime it reached your set temp and i just dont think the stove is set up to shut down all the time..

A Harman P61 without an ignitor (or with one disabled/broken)
typically operates in a maintenance burn mode (idle) when it reaches set temperature rather than shutting down completely, provided it is in Room Temp mode. It reduces pellet feed to a minimum to keep a small fire alive rather than shutting down.
