Interesting thread.
Make me think I should post instructions near the stove.
It would prolly go like this:
Leave the wood stove alone please..if cold turn up t-stat in the next room, thank you..lol.

+1 ....goes for hubby too as he is not allowed to mess with MY stove. :)

I don't think I'd let anyone else burn my stove for any extended amount of time. I'd be afraid they'd over fire it. Using the central heat for that period of time would be cheaper than replacing my stove ( or my house ).
A lot of people with wood burning experience are use to smoke dragons and unseasoned wood. I'm burning 3 year old wood ( oak ) this year, and I've noticed how quick it can get to 600 degrees. I'm thinking of getting a timer to set when I load the stove to check it in a few minutes so I dont forget it myself. That might be a good idea for someone using your stove for the first time.

Westkywood: the timer is a great idea. I know that my first year I have gone upstairs to do something while I let the stack warm up with the bypass open. Whatever I was "doing" should have taken 20 seconds and I end up staying upstairs for 5 mins. With a suddent overwhelming feeling of "oh chit" I run downstairs and see the inner layer of my double wall stove pipe starting to glow red...a situation that would have been avoided with a timer.

I guess thats the good part about a non-cat EPA stove. Most that do it wrong end up smoking up the glass. My worst problem is they don't pull the air out for reload or new starts. It makes a mess but nothng that can't be fixed.

My wife lights fires but really doesn't know how to run the stove. She doesn't like to put a whole lot of wood in the stove, so she isn't likely to overfire the stove. With our stove there is really only one control - the air lever goes in, the air lever goes out. I think she just leaves it the way she finds it.

Enjoy the baby!

I'm heading to Maui in December for a few weeks to be at my eldest son's wedding and visit my mother; so a sister is coming from Atlanta and will keep the home fires burning. I'm busy trying to think of all possible problems, cover things, write instructions, alert friends to be available...and write very concise but thorough and clear stove instructions...probably complete with videos she can watch. I'm hoping for a mild, snowless December...which is all we've had for several years.

Rideau: thanks for the comments. I am enjoying him sleeping 21 hours a day. LOL.

I like the videos idea. I must do that next time someone stays here. Most people around the area where I live burn in old dragons and the wood used is normally cut for 2-4 months before the burning season. A good friend of mine who has been burning wood for 20 years tells me about his chimney fires as if it is a yearly ritual..I just don't get it!

I haven't, but I certainly would. I mean, it might sound like it sometimes on HDC, but running a wood stove is not exactly rocket science. A little instruction and most people should be good to go.

Was going to edit, but can't for some reason.

Congrats on the little one. Our first also had a gigantic umbilical cord. We were also told it was the largest they'd seen. He's four now and I hope for your sake the size of the umbilical doesn't relate to the size of the attitude. ;)

Ha ha. If a big umbillical cord means a big attitude, I am doomed. I guess I will have to continue to explain that democracy begins when he turns 18 and not before. Until then it is straight dictatorship ;)

You'll have to let me know how that turns out for you. :)

The only person I let touch my stove is my wife and that's out of neccessity. I cannot always be home early enough to get it going in the evenings. What's amazing.......every year you would think that it's her first and we have had the same stove for 16 years now! Some people just have no common sense! Wish she would get paid for talking on the phone, I'd be a millionaire!!

You can have a run away just as easy..actually easier.
