The ad went on CL on 10/8. I saw it yesterday. Buck 91 Bay, four years old, $1000. Sent an email last night. Nothing this AM. Sent another. Ad is now gone.
I wanted to put that beast in at my MIL's house. I think there's even an 8" liner on her present insert, which is a stove for ambiance, not heat. I think the Buck would have lit that uninsulated old place up! In spite of a poor layout.
Deals like that don't last long this time of year. Did I mention, ?

BUT HOLD ON! My air ball was going OB but is deflected back in by a teammate (angel?) I scoop up the loose change, launch the last-second shot....AND I SCORE, FOR THE WIN!
The seller didn't check his email yesterday but responded last night, asking when I wanted to look at the stove. I told him I would be out his way this morning and he said that would work. This guy didn't run the stove, but is pretty sure everything works. Wow, that thing is a monster! But he is supplying some beefy gents to help me load the stove on Saturday; I wasn't looking forward to lifting that stove by myself. I didn't have time to mess with trying to get the cotter pins out of the warped heat shield to check the cat, but I'm hoping it's still working OK. It's $300 otherwise but it would still be a great deal IMO. He said he thought they were up around $3000 now, but I'll stop in at the dealer just to see. There's about 15' of cheap flex liner included...might be able to get a few bucks out of that. I don't need it for this install. I confirmed that my MIL's liner was 8". I looked down from the top of the chimney and it appears there's rigid probably down to the smoke chamber...I see flex when looking up inside the current insert. I didn't take the surround off the present insert but the fireplace opening is 36x27. I'm assuming it's deeper than the required 15.5" Looks like I may have some clearance issues on the mantle and in front of the door. I'll probably take the surround off tomorrow and see what's going on in there.
Anyhow, I'm just thrilled to get this stove for my MIL. She ran the thermostat pretty low and heated a couple of frequently-used rooms with portable electrics, to try to keep the heat bill within reason. She'll be kissing those heaters goodbye, and the power and gas companies are gonna be hatin' it. Thanks to earlier work, I'm got plenty of high-test fuel like Red Oak,White Ash and Sugar Maple to feed the beast. Looking forward to roasting my chestnuts by the Buck this Christmas!

I'll start a thread later for the install and the tons of questions I'll probably have.

Congrats, that is a huge monster stove! Give the guys a call at servicesales.com they are up to speed on parts for those things, they sell them like hot cakes. Nice to see someone has a fireplace big enough to put that monster in.

I'm going over there today to take sq.ft. measurements downstairs. I think the stove will fit, but I'm not 100% sure yet, so I'll also pull the surround on the present insert and take more measurements...and just see what I can see, like weather the liner is insulated.
I figured I needed to go big in that old place. No wall insulation (but the upstairs is generally not used so maybe that will help slow down heat loss upwards?) It also has 10' ceilings and I figure a big stove will have the heat to fill the trapped-air spaces in each room, plus more heat to move around through the doorways. I'll try to post a floor plan later in the install thread.
Thanks for the link to the parts guys. I'll see if they have some prices online, and compare them to the Buck dealer here. I'll probably get the lower heat shield for sure. Haven't looked at the cat/frame yet. I like to support the brick-and-mortars when I can but one guy at that shop annoyed me a while back so I haven't taken any business to them for a while. Maybe he is gone now...

I sure will! I'm looking forward to playing with a new stove. Bad thing is, a week ago I felt like I was in Fat City, wood-wise. Now I'm back to feeling like I'm not very far ahead.
Too bad I'm not putting the stove in out here at my place. We already have the beginnings of quite a Murderer's Row; The guy across the way burns a Country Flame BBF, and member maflake is about a block away with another Buck 91. I hope to get some valuable insights from him on what to expect. I'm also reading every thread I can dig up here that relates to the 91.
