I have to knock down my brick chimney for my new stove. I'm thinking of building the hearth from the old bricks. If I do this the hearth wouldn't be perfectly flat but with a 500lb stove I don't this will be an issue.

Is this a dumb idea from safety or technical purposes. I actually wonder if the old bricks could take the weight?

That will depend on the brick some older brick will be perfectly fine others will not. Also what stove are you using? What r value do you need for the hearth?
